Miradry Treatment

Tired of Sweaty Armpits? MiraDry Might Change Your Life!

If you’ve ever changed an outfit because of sweat marks, avoided raising your arm in a meeting, or gone through more antiperspirant than you’d like to admit, you’re not alone. Excessive underarm sweating (known clinically as hyperhidrosis) is more common than most people realise, and for many, everyday antiperspirants just don’t cut it.

That’s where MiraDry comes in. It’s one of the options we talk clients through at Allure Laser and Skin Studio here in Mackay, and in this post we wanted to walk you through what it actually is, how it works, and what to expect if you’re considering it, without the hype.

So, What Is MiraDry?

MiraDry is a medical device that uses controlled microwave energy to target the sweat and odour glands under the skin in the underarm area. Unlike antiperspirants or anti-sweat injections, which offer temporary relief, MiraDry is designed to reduce the activity of treated sweat glands, and because these glands generally don’t regenerate, the effects tend to be long-lasting.

A cooling system built into the device protects the surface of your skin during treatment, while the microwave energy works on the gland layer underneath.

Here’s the Bit Most People Want to Know: Does It Actually Work?

We get it, this is usually the first question. The honest answer is: for many people, yes, though as with any medical treatment, individual results can vary, and we can’t promise a specific outcome before we’ve actually assessed you.

What we can tell you is how it generally goes. Because the treatment targets the sweat glands directly rather than just blocking them temporarily, many clients notice a real reduction in sweating in the treated area. Some also notice less odour and less underarm hair over time, though these are secondary effects rather than the main purpose of treatment.

One thing worth knowing: only around 2% of your body’s sweat glands are actually in your underarms. So treating this specific area doesn’t affect your body’s ability to regulate its temperature elsewhere. Your body will still sweat normally everywhere else.

What Actually Happens During Treatment?

If you’re picturing something dramatic, it’s a lot more low-key than that. Here’s the general process:

1. Consultation and skin analysis. Before anything else, we sit down with you at our Mackay clinic to talk through your history, your goals, and whether MiraDry is a suitable option for you. This is also where we answer any questions or concerns.

2. Numbing the area. A local anaesthetic is applied so the treatment itself is as comfortable as possible. Most clients say it’s a lot more manageable than they expected.

3. The treatment itself. A handheld device is moved across the underarm area, delivering the microwave energy while the cooling system protects your skin. The whole thing takes well under an hour.

Roughly speaking, numbing takes 15–20 minutes, the treatment itself 30–45 minutes, and a short cooling period afterwards. You’ll walk out the same day, no hospital visit required.

What About Downtime and Side Effects?

This is where we want to be upfront with you, because you’ll see some clinics claim “zero downtime,” and that’s not quite the full picture. Most clients experience minimal downtime, but it’s honest to say that mild, temporary side effects like swelling, numbness, or tenderness in the treated area are possible, and these typically settle within a few days.

We’ll talk you through all of this in your consultation, including anything specific to your situation, before you decide whether to go ahead.

Is MiraDry the Right Choice for You?

MiraDry isn’t the only option out there for managing excessive sweating. Anti-sweat injections and topical treatments are other paths some people take, and each comes with its own trade-offs around how long the effects last, how invasive the treatment is, and cost over time. There isn’t a single “best” answer here, it really depends on your situation, which is exactly why we start with a proper conversation rather than jumping straight to a recommendation.

If you’re curious whether you’d be a good candidate, some signs it might be worth a chat include:

  • Underarm sweating that affects your daily comfort or confidence
  • An interest in a non-surgical option
  • Wanting something with less ongoing maintenance than antiperspirants or repeat injections

Getting Ready for Your Appointment

If you do go ahead, we’ll send you a simple checklist beforehand. In general, it involves shaving the underarm area about 24 hours prior, skipping deodorant on the day, and wearing something loose and comfortable to your appointment. We’ll also ask about any medications or recent treatments so we can plan around them.

Afterwards, we’ll run you through aftercare, which usually includes cold packs and taking it easy on vigorous exercise for a day or two, and we’ll book you in for a follow-up so we can check how things are progressing.
